Dr Gary James is researching the history of football in Manchester and the North West, and is based at Manchester Metropolitan University. As one of the foremost authorities in this field, he will describe in this illustrated talk the background and rationale for the rise of football as a mass spectator sport from its origins in the nineteenth century, and the part Manchester played in this rise. He has published widely on the subject.
